The era lately has been bombarded with a plethora of information that got the gamer communities abuzz. Reports said that mobile phones can now run triple-A games “smoothly.” But with the deluge of videos and such claims, a question bounces: is this the death of PC gaming?
Let’s look into that further. All this hype started off with two applications and among Indonesian gamer community, known as Winlator and Mobox; actually, these apps are the emulators required to play computer games on the mobile platform. Well, what actually are these two apps called Winlator and Mobox? With these emulators, computer-built games can now be run on smartphones. Triple-A game performance still requires powerful high-end gadgets; and, honestly, even these devices give poor results in terms of stability or even fluency.

Some user claim 15 FPS being a “smooth” Experience?
Many users of emulators insist that games, which run at 15 FPS on their devices, are “smooth” and playable. This has created quite an argument on the internet, where many gamers disagree, saying that 15 FPS cannot be called a “smooth” experience. What they mean is that even though the game might be technically playable, it is neither stable nor optimal. A stable 30 FPS is generally regarded as the minimum for a smooth gaming experience.

Despite these limitations, some users argue that there is no need to build a PC or buy a console to enjoy the latest games. With just a smartphone and an emulator like Winlator or Mobox, they claim, you can play PC games. These emulators make use of technologies like Wine and Box64. Wine, for example, is a compatibility layer that allows running Windows applications on POSIX-compatibility operating systems such as Linux, macOS, and BSD. Unlike typical virtual machines or emulators, Wine actually translates Windows API calls into POSIX calls, yielding higher performance and better memory efficiency.

So, does this mean that the era of PC gaming is over?
The answer is no. PCs will continue to thrive, supported by a large and dedicated community. The performance, flexibility, and versatility of PCs remain unmatched by smartphones. Sure, maybe with every advance in mobile technology, phone hardware could eventually support even PC games, but to the PC platform come some other great advantages, such as modding, high-performance gaming, and support for resource-intensive tasks such as video editing and 3D rendering. PCs are here to stay.
